Guests were delighted to a tour by local historian and historic restoration expert Larry Lof on Saturday morning at Sabal Palm Sanctuary along 8435 Sabal Palm Road in Brownsville.
Lof discussed a myriad of local historic events Saturday morning, including the Spanish settlers and their influences during the waning years of the steamboat era along the Rio Grande.
Lof also discussed the topography of the region along the Rio Grande River during the late 20th century, when steamboats were a common site carrying loads of cotton along the Rio Bravo, known today as the Rio Grande River.
Brownsville was considered a port city on delta land, and the Rio GrandeRiver as we know it today, Lof said, “is just a shadow of its former self.”
Lof is in charge of the Rabb Plantation Home’s restoration and has done extensive research on the rich history of the region, the plantation and the families who built and resided in the Queen Anne Style house.
