So what could be better than handheld food? Handheld food that comes in an edible container, that’s what. And the good – no, GREAT! – news is, these are so much easier to make than you think. A can of crescent roll dough — one of my very favorite “shortcut” ingredients — or dough sheets makes short work of these adorable, edible cones. I’m going to show you how to use them in both a sweet AND savory recipe.
All you need is a box of sugar cones, some tin foil, and non-stick cooking spray. And feel free to get creative! You can sprinkle or drizzle the cones with whatever you like – melted chocolate, everything bagel blend, sea salt, or caramel sauce. And fill ‘em up with your favorite treats! Here are just a few ideas that would be delicious:
- Mac and cheese
- Whipped potatoes (white or sweet)
- Chili
- Ice cream or frozen yogurt
- Chocolate pudding
- Pumpkin mousse
So stow away those plates and let’s get started!

Crescent Roll Cones
Makes: 8
Ingredients
- 1 can crescent roll dough
- 8 sugar cones
- Tin foil
- Non-stick cooking spray
Directions
- Preheat oven to 375 F; line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Wrap cones with tin foil and spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray.
- Unroll the dough onto a work surface and gently press to eliminate the perforations. With the short side of the dough facing you, use a sharp knife (or pizza cutter) to cut 8 long strips of dough as shown.
- Working with one cone at a time and starting from the bottom, wrap the cone with a strip of dough, slightly overlapping as you go and taking care to make sure that the tip is completely covered (to prevent leaks). Place cone, upside down, on your prepared baking sheet and keep chilled while you wrap the remaining cones (if desired, at this point you can brush with a little olive oil or melted butter and sprinkle with toppings).
- Bake for 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool cones on a tray or wire rack. When cool, gently remove the sugar cones and fill as desired – serve immediately.
Pizza Cones
Put out these cones and an assortment of pizza fillings and let guests make their own Pizza Cones!
Makes: 8
Ingredients
- 8 pre-baked crescent roll cones (brushed with a little olive oil and sprinkled with sesame seeds prior to baking, if desired)
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce (jarred or homemade)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella
- Assorted fillings (like diced red and yellow bell peppers, finely chopped broccoli, cooked and crumbled bacon, sliced pepperoni, mini meatballs)
Directions
- Form and bake cones as instructed above; keep oven on. Place fillings into small bowls or ramekins so guests can help themselves!
- Fill cones with a bit of cheese to start, and then alternate with layers of sauce, fillings, and additional cheese. Place cones in ovenproof mugs or a popover rack (or just lay them on their sides on your baking tray). Return to oven for 5-10 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Serve immediately.
Berries and Cream Cones
These lovely handheld desserts are perfect for a cocktail party or dessert buffet!
Makes: 8
Ingredients
- 8 pre-baked crescent roll cones (brushed with a little melted butter and sprinkled with coarse or sanding sugar prior to baking, if desired)
- 1 cup raspberries or chopped strawberries
- 2 tablespoons sugar, divided
- 2 tablespoons champagne (optional)
- 1 cup heavy cream
Directions
- In a small bowl combine the berries, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and champagne (if using). Let sit while you prepare the whipped cream.
- In the bowl of a mixer, using the whisk attachment, beat cream and 1 tablespoon of sugar until stiff peaks form. Transfer to a pastry bag fitted with a fluted tip (alternatively, you can use a zip-top bag with an opening snipped in the corner). Pipe a bit of cream into the bottom of each cone, and then alternate filling with the cream and berries, finishing with the cream. Serve immediately.
