Suraj Yadav of Haryana’s Bhiwani district bagged the All India Rank of 5 in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2017, results of which were declared on Sunday.
Yadav, a student of Vibrant Academy in Rajasthan’s Kota, scored 330 marks out of 366 to bag the best rank in India’s coaching capital.
“I was confident of scoring an AIR in the top 10 in the JEE (Advanced),” Yadav told the Hindustan Times.
The son of a contract teacher in Bhiwani and homemaker mother, Yadav told the Hindustan Times he came to Kota two years ago and has been taking coaching from Vibrant Academy since then.
The 16-year-old, who scored the AIR 27 in JEE (Mains) under general category, said the support from his parents and teachers helped him succeed in the exams.
“I studied around 10 to 12 hours daily including coaching classes, cleared concepts by attending classes, resolved doubts from teachers, completed homework and sought an answer for extra questions from teachers,” he said.
Yadav added he also solved the question papers of the Physics Olympiad from the last 18 years to ensure his success in JEE (Advanced). He said he stayed away from smartphones, movies, and sports and just talked to his parents in his spare time.
Yadav, who scored 94.4% marks in Class 12 in CBSE this year and 10 CGPA in Class 10, now wants to pursue a degree in computer science at IIT-Bombay.
His father, Rajkumar, said he was happy with his son’s achievement. “I am happy and satisfied that my son has achieved AIR Rank 5,” Rajkumar, who along with his wife Sunita Yadav lived with his son in Kota during his coaching, said.
Yadav said his elder sister Vaishali is an inspiration for him. Vaishali is pursuing a BTech from Delhi Technical University.
Narendra Awasthi, director of Vibrant Academy, said Yadav could have grabbed an AIR in the top 3 but the award of bonus marks to aspirants and no change in the answer options in a couple of ambiguous questions came in his way.
Last year, 41 students from Kota-based coaching institutes were placed among top 100 in JEE (Advanced), with four classroom students from Allen Career Institute bagging positions in the top 10.
Allen’s Aman Bansal topped the prestigious entrance exam, Bhavesh Dhingra secured the second position, Kunal Goyal third and Gaurav Didwania ninth.
More than 39,000 students from coaching institutes in Kota cleared JEE (Mains) this year and 48 students were among the top 100 rankers.
