THE joy keeps on coming for Sydney burger fans.
Today, Oporto Surry Hills will be giving away free food to celebrate the opening of its first ‘pequino’ (Portuguese for small) store and is bracing itself for a sellout event.
Recent burger store openings have sent burger fans rushing for a piece of the action, with cult US brands like In’N’Out selling out before it even opened, and Carl’s Jnr’s first Aussie outlet had punters camping out overnight.
While Oporto’s doesn’t have the pop culture appeal of a big US franchise, it is a staple on the Sydney burger circuit.
Founded in Bondi in 1986, Oporto’s flame-grilled chicken burgers were quite the novelty when they arrived with lashings of Portuguese piri-piri sauce, the brand’s signature flavour.
Much like McDonald’s revamped stores and build-your-own menu, Oporto’s new pequino outlet marks a departure from its older stores.
At just 50 square metres, it features a contemporary design, streamlined menu and seating for 10 diners.
The menu focuses on favourites like the flame-grilled Portuguese Chickens, Bondi Burgers, Embrulhos; Saladeiras and Jalapeño Poppers.
To celebrate the launch, Oporto Surry Hills will be giving away Spicy Chicken
Saledeira, Spicy Chicken Embrulho or a famous Double Bondi Burger between noon and 2pm.
If you want chips and a drink with your main, you’ll have to pay for it yourself.
The store is at Shop 1, 441-449 Elizabeth St (access via Devonshire Street) Surry Hills.
